What is an Ayurvedic View on Diabetes Mellitus?

In Ayurveda, it is co-related with ‘’Madhumeha’’ (Hyperglycemia), in which a person passes honey-like (sweet) urine. It is one of the among 20 types of Prameha (Urological disorder). This is due to excessive use of guru (heavy to digest), Snigdh (unctous), Amla (sour), navannapana (food prepare from newly harvested grains), Asya sukha (sedentary lifestyle), etc. These all cause aggravation of kapha dosha and lead to disturbance in kapha primarily, associated with Pitta. It creates an imbalance in the Srotas of the fatty tissues. These imbalanced doshas move towards Medo dhatu (fatty tissues), affect fat metabolism, lead to a further imbalance of kleda. Hence, all kleda (fluid) moves towards the urinary system and there will be increased production of urine leading to excess urination, gradually leading to Prameha.
